Choosing your cheer captain on skill alone is dangerous and potentially destructive if they don’t have the leadership skills that match their talent. That’s why I choose to emphasize leadership skills in my selection process.

Here are some good questions that I found on Ron Edmondson’s leadership blog that you can ask to determine if you’re ready to lead, and I think they are just as helpful for coaches when determining if the candidates we have  are really ready to lead our teams.

As a cheer captain, are you ready to do the right thing even when it’s the unpopular thing?

As a cheer captain, are you ready to be misunderstood sometimes…okay…many times?

As a cheer captain, are you ready to sacrifice for your team … even taking a back seat to let others shine?

As a cheer captain, are you ready to see things others may not yet be able to see?

As a cheer captain, are you ready to enter the unknown…first?

As a cheer captain, are you ready to keep confidences?

As a cheer captain, are you ready to delegate?

As a cheer captain, are you ready to see all sides of an issue?

As a cheer captain, are you ready to face conflict?

As a cheer captain, are you ready to have your integrity closely observed by your followers?

As a cheer captain, are you ready to receive criticism?

As a cheer captain, are you ready to defend your team?

This list is not exhaustive, but it’s a great place to start when you consider your candidates. Leaders don’t often get to shine … they get to work and serve in ways no one will ever see.
